Basic instructions for preparing Houjicha 🍫

How to properly prepare your HOUJICHA drink?

I have prepared instructions for you on how to prepare two basic houjicha drinks:

Don't be afraid to change the proportions to suit your taste, everyone tastes a little different and only by trying will you find "your" favorite preparation.

✨ Before you start preparing Houjicha, soak your chasen – a bamboo whisk in water to activate it (bamboo fibers need to soften before use) and work properly.

(If you don't have a whisk, the best alternative is definitely a shaker or any sealable glass in which you whisk the matcha with water or milk. However, I must warn you that the taste of houjicha prepared this way "cold" will be a little different than the warm preparation. HOT HOUJICHA LATTE:

  1. Please 2–3 g of houjicha powder in a tea bowl, or chawan . (If you are just starting out with houjicha, I recommend starting with 2 g.)

  2. Pour 35–40 ml of water heated to 80 degrees into a bowl. (This is really important if you water the houjicha hot with water, so it you will burn .)

  3. Take activated (soaked) chasen – bamboo whisk – and whisk the houjicha in a zigzag pattern (M, W, Z with a wrist movement) until a thick foam forms on top.

  4. Pour 100 ml of milk into a jug or glass and whisk it into a warm foam.

  5. 💡 Robcha's tip: If you are just starting out with houjicha, add 150–200 ml of milk. The taste will then be less pronounced. Over time, try different ratios and you will definitely find "your" favorites.

  6. Pour the houjicha from chawan into a mug and pour over whipped milk.

  7. Now enjoy your heavenly moment of peace and quiet. ☁️

ICED HOUJICHA LATTE:

  1. Please si 4 g houjichy in a tea bowl, or chawan .

  2. Pour 40–50 ml of water heated to 80 degrees . (This is really important if you water the houjicha hot with water, so it you will burn .)

  3. Take activated (soaked) chasen – bamboo whisk – and whisk the houjicha in a zigzag pattern (M, W, Z with a wrist movement) until a thick foam forms on top.

  4. Put ice in a glass and pour 150 ml of milk to taste.

  5. Pour the prepared matcha over the milk.

  6. Now all you have to do is mix everything and enjoy a GODLY drink. 👼🏻
